Showroom London in collaboration Michael Reeves Associates
2016 Interview with Michael Reeves, Design Director
Award-winning interior and product designer Michael Reeves opened his first showroom over two decades ago. Since then, he has worked on numerous private and commercial projects around the world, from his base in London to New York, France and Mustique BVI. His current showroom on Pimlico Road showcases his love for contemporary luxury with a carefully curated selection of furniture, decorative accessories, textiles and contemporary art. We asked Reeves about his muses, methods and experience of collaborating with Eric Kuster Metropolitan Luxury.
Tell us about the birth of Michael Reeves Associates. Where did it all start?
Michael Reeves Associates began in 1995 when I returned to London, after living in New York for five years. It began in a tiny shop in Chelsea selling antiques and decorative pieces. Until then I had had a successful career as a fashion designer, but my homes had been published in various magazines, which lead to interior design commissions. In the Spring of 1999 I launched my first furniture collection in the windows of Joseph womenswear store on London’s Fulham Road. It was an immediate success, and I quickly moved into larger premises in Brompton Cross, West London [now home to luxury labels from Chanel to Ralph Lauren].
How would you describe the Michael Reeves signature style? And what are your main influences?
I like to describe my style as "Quiet Luxury”. My interior design concept is about scale, balance, flow and controlled simplicity. This approach works whether the project is an eighteenth century house or a new build riverside apartment. I prefer an eclectic mix for interiors, and use art, antiques, and decorative pieces as accents.
What have been your career highlights so far? Tell us about your favourite projects and why they stand out.
My greatest career highlight was winning the Andrew Martin International Interior Designer of the Year Award in 1998, after being in the business for only four years. The award was presented at a party at London’s V&A Museum. It is a night I will always remember. Another highlight was decorating a house on Mustique in the West Indies, for which we also won an award.
What would be your dream project?
Another commission for a house in the West Indies!
What motivates you on a day-to-day basis?
Everything and anything! We are surrounded by inspiration every day. I am also an avid auction viewer, magazine devourer and voyeur of my environment, wherever I am.
Are you seeing any future trends that you think will have a major impact on the interior design market?
I really dislike “trends”. Just as there is in fashion, there is also a cycle of style in interior design which returns in phases. This is the nearest I get to following “trends”
Why did you choose to work with Eric Kuster Metropolitan Luxury?
We invited Eric Kuster into our showroom as our styles and furniture collections – although noticeably different – are also very compatible and complement each other perfectly.
What has been your experience of working with the Eric Kuster team?
The Eric Kuster team are very enthusiastic and professional to work with, and have an excellent relationship with their clients.
How would you describe the quality and experience of Eric Kuster Metropolitan Luxury to others
It’s a one-stop-shop for clients who love the Eric Kuster quality and look!
